In June 2012, we deployed a pilot of the Surtrac system on nine intersections in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The crossing of three major roads (Penn Circle, Penn Avenue, and Highland Avenue) leads to changing traffic patterns throughout the day, making it difficult to manage congestion with conventional traffic signal control methods. Surtrac reduced travel times more than 25% on average, and wait times were reduced an average of 40%.
Since the initial success of the pilot, we’ve expanded the system several times. As of 2016, Surtrac is installed at 50 intersections in Pittsburgh, with additional expansions currently in planning.
